Bow down for development in the Park

Many Plymouth residents are beginning to feel like serfs of the City Council. It appears that plans for the development of a swimming pool and other facilities in Central Park have been pushed forward with little regard to the views and wishes of residents.

What’s more, when Plymouth people have complained at the heavy handed treatment by the Council, the reply is “Oh it’s all being driven by the Government”.

The drive would appear to include massive new EU regulations about lighting and other 'urbanisation’ of this green space. As residents have pointed out the park was created to give respite from the City. It is supposed to be green and rural, rather than tarmac.

At the recent Peverell Park church meeting most people were against the plans, but still the City Council is pushing for the development. This seems very strange after other Plymouth swimming pools are being closed.

Some residents have also been upset by the efforts of the Evening Herald which has pedalled a strong line for the project without examining the full advantages and disadvantages. A parent pointed out that the paper has been encouraging children to sign forms of support when they are too young to understand the pros and cons of such a vast development.

The Column believes there may be a hidden common purpose between the City Council and our local press. Is this healthy?

Mountwise residents fear injury from "lobby icerink"

Beaky was pleased to stop at one of the Towers for a rest and heard a few things. The Mount Wise Tower residents have apparently been getting frustrated and more than a bit concerned that despite their protests over three years, the Council has failed to tackle the lobby floors which are like ice when wet.

Resident's concerns have been met with the usual delays , quotes, promises and tomorrows, but nothing happens. "They've got money to throw at these pointless tentants' management schemes, yet nothing for basic safety measures," complained one. The Column thinks they have a point. PCC has a Duty of Care to residents, employees and visitors and they should take action before someone gets hurt.

Beaky hopped to an adjacent sill. He was interested to hear a converstion about tenants' management schemes. It seems that when the Pembroke Street management scheme was being formed, one person held 4 posts on the Board of Directors. When it was finalised, 3 of those Directorships were given over to 2 members of the Marlbourgh Street Housing office, and one to a local Councillor.

Surprisingly an astute Tower resident noticed that now they are trying to form a similar quango in the Mount Wise Towers, calling itself Three Rivers Housing Ltd, 1 member of the Board has 4 posts... she wondered if there was a pattern...! Equally PCC refused to discuss such matters with residents. Now why would they get cold feet? At one time in the USA, residents were forced out of properties with potential value and big profits by unscrupulous developers taking over and manipulating the Tenents' Associations. No, it couldn't be? Could it?

Before launching into space, Beaky heard a few gripes about Mr Nally of the Council. Seems he really doesn't care about the fact that residents now live in the middle of a building site.

ProActive denied cash

Suprisingly for our ‘throw it away like water’ City Council, they have recently denied ProActive further funding. Having already received circa £120,000 to assist their questionable training for school children, Common Purpose aligned ProActive was getting ready for another large suck of taxpayers money.

So what is going on here? Who are these people? And do you parents know just who is ‘educating’ your children and on what subjects? We feel there are many questions to be asked!

Locals strike out in Burger Kiosk venture

It has been reported that Mr and Mrs Brookes have done well in their local burger and tea kiosk at Mutton Cove. After a lot of work they have provided a much appreciated service to residents, locals and summer vistitors.

A pity that they had to endure a theft of stock from dishonest young thieves. We hope that the Brookes will keep at it and the villains will be brought to account. Local entrepreneurship shines through.
